The navigation traffic in the Suez Canal witnessed Sunday the transit of the “ONE FRIENDSHIP” container ship, the latest container ship of the Japanese ONE shipping line, which was built in 2023, on its maiden voyage

The container ship passed through the South convoy on its journey from Saudi Arabia to Egypt, with a tonnage of 155,000 tons, a length of 366 meters and a depth of 51 meters.

Osama Rabie, head of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced earlier today the resumption of the transit of the cargo ship XIN HAI TONG 23 through the canal within the convoy of the south after completing its repair by the ship’s crew and ensuring its capability of sailing, out of a total of 88 ships from both directions, with a total net tonnage of 6 million tons.

The head of the authority pointed out that the results of the comprehensive examination prepared by the authority’s marine rescue team on the technical condition of the cargo ship in the Suez Ghat area, which broke down last Thursday, confirming the integrity of the ship’s rudder and propellers and that there is no objection to resuming its sailing in the canal again.

Navigation movement in the canal is regular

He explained that the navigation movement in the canal is regular and was not affected by bad weather, as the Suez Canal succeeded, yesterday in completing the transit of 89 ships with a total net tonnage of 5.3 million tons, which is a testimony of confidence in the authority’s ability to manage the navigational course in the most difficult climatic conditions.

Rabie stressed that navigation emergencies are something that can occur in all navigational channels and cannot be completely prevented, but work is needed to reduce its impact and deal with it properly, noting that the incidence of emergencies in the canal is almost negligible when compared to the rates of ships crossing the canal.

He also stressed that the Suez Canal has come a long way towards implementing an ambitious business strategy to improve the navigational services provided to customers and keep pace with the rapid development in the ship industry globally through the continuation of development projects in the canal to increase its dimensions and duplication areas, most notably the southern sector development project, which aims to duplicate the area from 122 km to  132 km, with a length of 10 km added to the new Suez Canal to make it 82 km long instead of 72 km, in addition to widening and deepening the southern region of the canal, starting from kilometer 132 to kilometer 162, which is planned to be completed during the current year.
