Ocean Network Express (ONE) has announced the naming of its newbuild containership, ONE Sparkle, marking a significant milestone in the company’s history. The naming ceremony took place on February 14, highlighting ONE’s commitment to sustainable shipping and fleet expansion.

Advanced Features of ONE Sparkle

Built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea, ONE Sparkle is designed with methanol- and ammonia-ready fuel capability, allowing future conversion to these alternative fuels.

Key features include:

  • Optimized hull design for improved energy efficiency
  • Energy-saving devices to reduce fuel consumption
  • Smart technology for real-time operational efficiency
  • Shore power connection capabilities for reduced emissions at port

The vessel is classed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and will sail under the Singaporean flag, managed by OneSea Solutions, a joint venture between ONE and Seaspan Corporation.

CEO’s Statement on ONE Sparkle

Jeremy Nixon, CEO of ONE, emphasized the vessel’s significance:

“The naming of ONE Sparkle represents another important milestone for ONE. This vessel is our first owned newbuilding, and it also showcases our commitment to sustainable shipping with its innovative design and alternative fuel capabilities. As we expand our owned fleet, these advanced vessels will play a crucial role in meeting our environmental targets while enhancing our service reliability.”

Expansion of ONE’s Green Fleet

ONE Sparkle is part of a larger expansion effort, with:

  • 20 large ammonia/methanol-ready containerships being built in Korea and Japan, scheduled for 2025 and 2026 deliveries.
  • Twelve 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel containerships on order in China, set for delivery in 2027—ONE’s first fleet of methanol dual-fuel vessels.

Commitment to Decarbonization

As a signatory of the Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonisation, ONE is actively working towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The company has implemented a Green Strategy and a Decarbonization Roadmap, focusing on:

  1. Carbon management
  2. Operational efficiency
  3. Green investments
  4. Alternative fuels
  5. Ecosystem building

According to its 2024 Sustainability Report released on October 15, 2024, ONE is on track to achieve a 70% reduction in Scope 1 emissions per TEU-km from a 2008 baseline by 2030, aligning with its environmental goals.

The launch of ONE Sparkle marks a major step forward in ONE’s sustainability efforts and fleet modernization. By adopting alternative fuel-ready technologies, the company is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also reinforcing its leadership in green shipping solutions.
