Ocean Network Express (ONE) has ordered ten new container ships that will feature a bow cover and other energy-saving technologies, says an article published on Ship-technology.
Twenty-foot equivalent units
Expected to be delivered between 2025 and 2026, the new large vessels will have a carrying capacity of more than 13,700 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
The new vessels will be designed to operate on methanol and ammonia.
Medium-term strategy
To implement on-board carbon capture and storage on delivery, the company has commenced talks with the shipyard and equipment manufacturers.
The new order ‘is in line with the company’s medium-term strategy announced in March 2022 and follows the ten vessels ordered in May’.
Biofuel trial
Last month, ONE successfully completed a biofuel trial on board the MOL ENDOWMENT boxship.
The biofuel used in the test was B24, a blend of used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME) and very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO).
Targeting carbon neutrality
Meanwhile, last December, ONE agreed to acquire controlling stakes in three West Coast container terminals in the US.
As part of its green strategy, ONE is targeting carbon neutrality by 2050.
Greener assets
Through investments in greener assets and technologies, the firm is focused on attaining sustainable maritime transportation.
It also aims to decarbonise maritime transport through alliances with industry stakeholders.
