ONE Setting Sail On Wind-Powered Innovation For A Sustainable Era

Ocean Network Express (ONE) is teaming up with Econowind to trial wind propulsion on the MV Kalamazoo, a feeder vessel operating between Pusan, Yokohama, and Honolulu. The installation of VentoFoil containers marks a significant step towards sustainable shipping practices.

Wind Propulsion

The VentoFoils, resembling aeroplane wings, capture wind energy, slashing fuel use and emissions. With a smart suction system and the capacity to generate 400kW of power, they cut fuel consumption by 5%. These automated devices adjust to wind conditions and can be controlled from the ship’s bridge.

“ONE is committed to minimizing our environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050,” said Hiroki Tsujii, Managing Director at ONE. “This trial with Econowind is an important step forward in our efforts to explore innovative and sustainable solutions for the maritime industry.”

Sustainability Assessment

The trial, starting January 2024 for six months, will rigorously examine VentoFoils’ performance, focusing on fuel use, emissions, and operational efficiency. Results will determine wind propulsion’s sustainability in shipping. Partnering with Econowind and NORSE UK, aligned with ‘Target Net Zero by 2050,’ fits into ONE’s green strategy: managing carbon, optimizing operations, exploring eco-tech, and community green building. ONE persists in steering the maritime industry toward sustainability.
