OneLearn Global has launched a new best-practice bunkering course for crew safety and to help cut the risk of costly, litigious disputes, says an article published on csi news website.

Bunkering course for crew safety

The digital e-Learning training provider’s Safe Bunkering programme covers how and how not to receive and store bunker fuels. Issues can arise if vessels’ bunkers are not initially kept separate from previous bunker liftings or when stored at the incorrect temperature.

Failure to follow the right storage or safety procedures could lead to a bunker spill or even fire, something OneLearn’s latest programme aims to address with its step-by-step guide to onboard bunkering and fuel transfer procedures.

The 20-minute course features sections on fuel types, bunker planning and pre-bunker checks, bunker transfer monitoring and completion, oil spill prevention, the ISO 8217 specification and MARPOL regulations.

After taking the course, crew members will be able to identify potential hazards, understand why careful planning before bunkering is essential and explain the need for regular monitoring when topping off bunker tanks.

Nigel Cleave, Senior Advisor, OneLearn Global, said: “When it comes to bunkering, things can easily go wrong if crew members do not have the right training or fail to follow the correct procedures. Our latest course is practical, straight-forward and easy to understand for seafarers involved in bunkering operations. By investing just 20 minutes of time, mariners will develop the knowledge and proficiency to carry out duties safely, minimising the risk of accidents or incidents. Also, potential bunker disputes can be avoided by following the correct procedures.”

Participants work through the online course before doing an assessment, which requires a score of at least 70% for a pass.
