Following its recent revival of robotics research and strategic investments in key robotics companies, OpenAI aims to position itself in a market projected to be worth $66 billion by 2032. However, while the company’s ambitions signal a strong interest in this growing field, its humanoid robotics plans remain in their infancy, with timelines and specific applications yet to be defined, reports IE.

OpenAI’s Renewed Robotics Ambitions

After a three-year hiatus, OpenAI has revived its robotics research division, signaling a renewed focus on the potential of humanoid robots.

The company is reportedly in discussions about creating its robotic systems to address various industry needs, including warehouse operations, in-home assistance, and industrial automation.

Strategic Investments in Robotics

OpenAI has strategically aligned itself with robotics pioneers like Figure AI and 1X. Through a $625 million investment in Figure AI, OpenAI has contributed to advancements like the Figure 02 humanoid robot.

Similarly, its collaboration with 1X focuses on developing robots such as EVE, which leverage advanced AI models for real-world adaptability.

Collaborations on Custom AI Chips

To optimize the performance of its humanoid robots, OpenAI is reportedly working with Broadcom and TSMC on an “inference processor.”

This specialized AI chip could significantly enhance the processing capabilities of robotics systems, enabling them to operate more efficiently in diverse environments.

Market Challenges and Competition

OpenAI will face stiff competition from established players like Nvidia and Tesla. They are already making significant strides in humanoid robotics.

Despite these challenges, OpenAI has re-entred into the market, backed by its innovative AI models and strategic partnerships. It could establish it as a formidable contender in the field.

OpenAI’s Previous Robotics Milestones

Before pausing its robotics research in 2021, OpenAI has achieved notable milestones.  It includes training a robotic arm to solve a Rubik’s Cube and developing Roboschool, a simulation tool for AI-driven robotics training.
