- ORBCOMM’s CrewView gives ship crews real-time visibility into smart containers without needing satellite connectivity.
- Instant SMS alerts and onboard access help crews respond faster to container issues like temperature shifts or power failures.
- The solution supports vessel-to-shore monitoring, interactive stowage maps, and seamless data integration with third-party platforms.
- Successfully piloted across major carriers, CrewView strengthens ORBCOMM’s end-to-end smart container strategy.
ORBCOMM has introduced CrewView, a new onboard visibility tool that allows ship crews to monitor smart refrigerated and dry containers in real time during voyages. The solution is aimed at improving visibility at sea by helping crews quickly identify issues like temperature changes or power loss, enabling prompt action to safeguard cargo and ensure smooth operations.
Improving Onboard Visibility and Response with CrewView
CrewView addresses a longstanding gap in container visibility during transit, enabling vessel crews to monitor smart containers directly from onboard systems. ORBCOMM CEO Sameer Agrawal highlighted its value in automating monitoring tasks, allowing early detection of problems and supporting faster, data-driven decisions. The system is designed to improve crew efficiency, minimize cargo spoilage, enhance onboard safety, and offer transparent monitoring to both ship and shore stakeholders.
The solution delivers instant SMS alerts to crew mobile devices when issues are detected in ORBCOMM-enabled smart containers, eliminating the need for satellite connectivity for onboard visibility. At the same time, vessel-to-shore data transmission allows shore-based teams to maintain oversight. CrewView also displays real-time container loading and stowage data using interactive maps within the ORBCOMM Maritime platform, showing container positions by bay, row, and tier. APIs support integration with third-party platforms and devices, ensuring flexibility in data sharing and alerts.
This launch marks a significant advancement in ORBCOMM’s efforts to digitalize the full lifecycle of smart containers—from port to sea to inland transit. With rising demand for high-value, temperature-sensitive shipments, CrewView brings ships into the visibility chain, reducing blind spots and reinforcing operational continuity.
ORBCOMM’s development of CrewView builds on its long-standing partnership with Vobal Technologies, from which it acquired assets in May 2025. Agrawal noted that with smart containers becoming standard across the industry, ORBCOMM made a strategic move to bring the technology fully in-house and expand its maritime offerings.
