  • Comprehensive analysis by maritime technology company Orca AI shows that its market-leading automated situational awareness platform achieved significant operational gains for clients in 2023.
  • The analysis was carried out on 15 million nautical miles-worth of data collected in open waters by 267 customer vessels—comprising tankers, containers, dry bulk carriers and Ro-Ro vessels—equipped with the Orca AI platform.
  • With an increase of 26% in average minimum distance sailed, the fleet as a whole also saw an overall 33% reduction in close encounters in open waters and a 40% decline in crossing events.

Maritime technology firm Orca AI reported results from the utilization of its automated situational awareness platform, as detailed in a comprehensive analysis. The platform, implemented on 267 vessels including tankers, containers, dry bulk carriers, and Ro-Ro vessels, contributed to a reduction of 172,716 tonnes in CO2 emissions and fuel savings. This outcome was attributed to a decrease in sharp maneuvers and speed drops, resulting in fewer potential incidents and collisions.

AI platform reports reduction in CO2 emissions

The analysis was based on data from 15 million nautical miles in open waters. It revealed a 26% increase in the average minimum distance sailed by the fleet, a 33% reduction in close encounters, and a 40% decline in crossing events in open waters. On average, each ship encountered two close events per 1,000 nautical miles. These events were evaluated against key performance indicators such as the closest point of approach, reaction time, average speed, cross-track error, and weather conditions.

Dor Raviv, the CTO and Co-founder of Orca AI, highlighted the consistent operational improvements achieved year after year. He emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing safety and efficiency in the shipping industry while also focusing on reducing operational costs through lower fuel consumption. According to Raviv, the company’s platform not only supports corporate sustainability targets but also aids in maintaining Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) scores for ships.

The Orca AI platform includes the SeaPod lookout unit, which is equipped with high-resolution daylight and thermal cameras, offering a 225-degree field of view. This data, combined with other sensor data onboard, is displayed on a user-friendly interface, enabling real-time identification and tracking of marine objects. These features are intended to enhance navigation safety. Additionally, the FleetView platform allows real-time data access to shore-based managers, aiding in trend analysis, navigational behavior monitoring, and training.

Raviv also noted that the platform fosters collaboration among vessel masters, officers, and fleet managers, leading to tangible performance improvements. By reducing fuel consumption and emissions and mitigating potential risks and costs associated with safety incidents, the platform presents benefits for the entire shipping industry. Rivav expressed optimism for even more substantial results in the upcoming year.
