Projections indicate a further decrease in water levels, falling below 80 feet in early April, posing challenges to vessel movement through the canal.

Chemical tankers and liquefied petroleum gas carriers, constituting a significant portion of Panamax-class vessels, are affected. Ports heavily reliant on the Panama Canal, such as the Port of New York and New Jersey, Port of Savannah, and Port Houston, are experiencing delays, impacting total twenty-foot equivalent unit throughput.

East Coast ports, including Savannah and New York/New Jersey, are facing additional delays due to low water levels. The Port Pair Delays for the Port of Savannah have increased by an average of six days, adding extra transit times and impacting schedules. The delays are even more pronounced further up the Eastern Seaboard, affecting the Port of New York and New Jersey.

Comparison with West Coast Ports

Comparatively, West Coast ports like the Port of Los Angeles have shorter port pair delays, under three days and nearly a day less than the previous year. The disparities highlight the regional impact of water level challenges.
