As part of its commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, the Panama Canal has announced the opening of the NetZero Slot, a dedicated low-carbon emissions vessel transit slot—the move, outlined in Advisory to Shipping No. A-07-2025 seeks to encourage customers in their decarbonisation journey, reports Canal De Panama.

Implementation Timeline

Beginning October 5, 2025, the Panama Canal will launch the initial phase of the NetZero Slot for Neopanamax ships that have particular low-carbon emission requirements. In contrast to past transit slot sales, this slot will not be auctioned but will be allocated by competition in Period 1A, conducted 30 days prior to the transit date.

Eligibility Criteria

In its first phase, the NetZero Slot will be open to ships having dual-fuel engines burning fuel with a carbon intensity of less than 75 gCO2(e)/MJ (from extraction to combustion, or Well-to-Wake, or WtW). Additional requirements for a second phase, due in 2026, will be published in an eventual Advisory to Shipping.

Benefits for the Maritime Industry

Vessels securing the NetZero Slot will receive several key advantages, including:

  1. Flexible Scheduling: The ability to choose the transit date within the designated week.
  2. Guaranteed Transit Time: A maximum transit duration of 24 hours.
  3. Just-in-Time (JIT) Service: Optimized scheduling for increased efficiency.

Commitment to Sustainability

The Panama Canal continues to reinforce its position as one of the safest and most environmentally friendly waterways in the world. Deputy Administrator and Sustainability Officer Ilya Espino de Marotta emphasized the initiative’s role in supporting global maritime decarbonization.

“By motivating investment in vessels capable of using low-carbon fuels and energy-efficient technologies, we are recognizing and rewarding our clients who are leading the transition toward a more sustainable future. At the same time, we are preparing for the necessary regional infrastructure and logistics to support steady progress toward global decarbonization goals,” stated Mrs. Espino de Marotta.

Looking Ahead

With the NetZero Slot, the Panama Canal deepens its commitment to cleaner, more sustainable shipping, inviting its customers to join the world in net-zero carbon emission goals by 2050.
