- Panama Canal introduces the NetZero Slot, reserving one weekly transit slot for low-emission vessels.
- Eligible ships must be dual-fuel capable and prepared to operate on green methanol, green ammonia, bio-LNG, or bio-LPG.
- Benefits include guaranteed transit within 24 hours, Just-in-Time service, and scheduling flexibility.
- Selection will be based on cargo condition, vessel capacity, and economic contribution, rather than auctioning.
The Panama Canal has introduced a new “NetZero Slot” in its transit reservation system, aimed at promoting the decarbonization of global shipping and advancing its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. According to a release from the Panama Canal Authority (PanCanal), the initiative is designed to reward operators investing in alternative fuels and low-emission technologies.
NetZero Slot Launch and Participation
The first allocation of the NetZero Slot will take place on October 3, 2025, for transits scheduled during the week of November 2–8, 2025. From that point forward, one weekly slot will be reserved exclusively for vessels meeting low-emission criteria. Ships awarded this slot will gain key benefits, including freedom to select their preferred transit date within the week, guaranteed passage within 24 hours, access to the Just-in-Time service, and flexibility to substitute vessels of equivalent specifications.
To qualify in the initial phase, vessels must be registered as dual-fuel and capable of operating on at least one fuel with a carbon intensity factor of 75 gCO₂e/MJ or less. Eligible fuels include green methanol, green ammonia, bio-LNG, and bio-LPG. Although immediate use of these fuels is not required, the canal will recognize vessels prepared for future operations once supply becomes available. Unlike standard auctions, the NetZero Slot will follow a prioritization process: preference will be given to loaded vessels, higher-capacity ships under the PCUMS system, and those making greater economic contributions through tolls and service payments.
By introducing this initiative, the Panama Canal strengthens its role as a driver of the maritime energy transition, encouraging adoption of sustainable technologies. “The NetZero Slot is an unequivocal signal of our commitment to sustainability and the competitiveness of global trade. Through this initiative, we aim to support our customers in the transition toward a low-emissions future,” said Ilya Espino de Marotta, Deputy Administrator and Chief Sustainability Officer.
