Peel Ports Group has committed to investing £10 million (equivalent to US$13.4 million) in Heysham Port. This financial injection is aimed at enhancing the port’s capacity and operational efficiencies. Heysham Port serves as a vital trade link connecting the UK mainland with both the Island of Ireland and the Isle of Man. The investment underscores Peel Ports’ commitment to strengthening this key trade gateway, reports Container News.

Significant Investment

Peel Ports has announced a significant investment aimed at future-proofing operations and enhancing resilience at Heysham Port. This substantial investment will also support customers in increasing the volume of goods they can move through the port.

The planned upgrades include a reconfiguration of the port’s trailer park to optimize space and flow. Additionally, a new multi-lane smart gate operating system will be implemented to improve efficiency and reduce congestion for hauliers. The project also involves the installation of a new, state-of-the-art terminal operating system for the entire facility.

This investment is expected to benefit all operators at Heysham Port, including the Isle of Man Steam Packet, CLDN, and Stena Line. These companies stand to gain from improved efficiency, increased capacity, and enhanced overall terminal operations.

The reconfigured trailer park will create additional space to accommodate future growth. This is particularly important for Stena Line, which is planning to deploy two new-build, state-of-the-art ‘NewMax’ ferries at the port. These new vessels will provide a significant 40% increase in freight capacity compared to their predecessors. The infrastructure improvements are also projected to lead to operational time savings for all port customers.

The introduction of the new smart gate operating system is specifically aimed at improving the experience for hauliers by enhancing reliability, reducing congestion at the port entrance and exit points, and creating additional space within the facility.
