7

Container News reports that Peel Ports Group has reduced its operational greenhouse gas emissions by 48% over the past five years—a major leap in its decarbonisation trajectory.

This significant drop applies to Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, compared to a 2020 baseline, using a location-based accounting method.

Key Operational Metrics from FY2025

  • Electricity consumption declined by 6.8%, while the group’s total energy usage dropped by 2.8% year-on-year.
  • Peel Ports expanded its learning and development efforts, with 125 apprentices onboard.
  • Workplace safety improved significantly: the all-injury rate across the group fell by 44%.
  • Employees received a total of 66,528 hours of training during this period.

Green Infrastructure & Innovation Drive

In a notable investment for clean energy, Peel Ports has acquired five wind turbines at the Port of Liverpool. These turbines are expected to generate around 6 GWh of renewable electricity annually, directly contributing to the port’s energy needs.

The port group has also launched its TECH365 programme, a multi-million-pound initiative focusing on automation and technology. The plan is spearheaded by Gavin Laybourne, the company’s first Chief Information & Technology Officer, and aims to modernise operations through innovation.

Long-Term Targets & Environmental Ambitions

  • Peel Ports aims to reach net-zero across its value chain (Scope 3) by 2050, with interim milestones by 2030.
  • It plans to supply 50% of its energy to ports and tenants from renewable sources by 2030.
  • The group has set goals of zero pollution incidents and achieving “zero harm” (relating to employee injuries) by 2028.
