Peninsula has expanded its sustainable fuel distribution capabilities by adding the tanker Aalborg to the Port of Barcelona, enabling the supply of 100% biofuels (B100). Recently, the Aalborg delivered 2,200 mt of B30 very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) to Hapag-Lloyd’s Yantian Express containership, using ISCC EU-certified biodiesel derived from used cooking oil, according to Offshore Energy.
Boosting Adoption of Lower Carbon Marine Fuels
The introduction of Aalborg facilitates the adoption of lower carbon marine fuels in the Western Mediterranean. The move aligns with Peninsula’s collaboration with the Port of Barcelona to encourage alternative fuel supplies, offering shipowners the opportunity to comply with Fuel EU Maritime regulations, EU ETS reductions, and improve their CII ratings.
Victor Morales, Chief Commercial Officer at Peninsula, emphasized the growing demand for biofuels and highlighted the company’s commitment to providing both conventional and alternative fuel solutions, partnering with shipping companies like Hapag-Lloyd in their efforts to reduce GHG emissions and move towards net-zero.
