Persistent Fuel Quality Challenges In Maritime Operations

134

The 2024 Lloyd’s Register (LR) Fuel Quality Report highlights ongoing issues in fuel quality, with factors like catfines, sulphur content, and flash points continuing to impact the maritime industry. Since the industry’s switch to very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) in 2020, shipowners and operators have faced recurring challenges, with occasional instances of chemical contamination still reported.

Biofuels and Emerging Fuel Standards

An increasing number of operators are incorporating biofuels into their fuel mix, with many regularly trialling these fuels. The report covers the implications of new regulations, such as ISO8217:2024, the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS), and IMO’s guidelines, which are expected to spur biofuel supply but could complicate quality control and pricing.

Lloyd’s Register’s Role in Fuel Quality Assurance

Lloyd’s Register, through its Fuel Oil Bunker Analysis and Advisory Service (FOBAS), continues to support clients with its comprehensive fuel testing and contamination detection capabilities. Their analysis assists operators in making informed fuel purchasing decisions, with the latest report providing insights into regulatory compliance and strategies to meet evolving environmental standards.
