Peter Döhle has increased its order of 8,400 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships from GSI to 5. This follows an initial contract for 3 ships with an option for 2 more, and the subsequent exercising of those 2 options, reports iMarine News.
New Order Placed
Peter Döhle has ordered new ships, with each unit priced between US$120 million and US$125 million, totaling over US$600 million. The first deliveries are expected between 2027 and 2028.
Peter Döhle, founded in 1956, operates a large fleet of container ships and bulk carriers. Last June, they ordered four 14,000 TEU methanol-ready container ships from Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China, marking their first order from a Chinese shipyard in nine years.
This order comes amidst recent U.S. proposals to impose port fees on Chinese-built ships and Trump’s announcement of an executive order to “curb” China’s shipbuilding, which caused concern in the shipping industry.
Despite these political developments, Western shipowners like Peter Döhle and CMA CGM are still choosing Chinese shipyards. CMA CGM recently contracted Jiangnan Shipyard for twelve 18,000 TEU container ships, demonstrating the strong competitiveness and irreplaceability of Chinese shipbuilders in the global market.
