TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd., based in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, has marked a major milestone in sustainable maritime innovation with the successful launch of the world’s first methanol dual-fuelled KAMSARMAX bulk carrier. The vessel was launched by its Philippine manufacturing base, TSUNEISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES (CEBU), Inc. (THI), on 17 July 2025 at Slipway No. 2. Its maiden voyage is scheduled for January 2026.

Advancing Decarbonisation Through Methanol Propulsion

The vessel adopts methanol as a cleaner alternative fuel, resulting in significant environmental benefits: a 10% reduction in CO₂ emissions, an 80% cut in NOₓ, and a 99% decrease in SOₓ emissions compared to traditional vessels. Use of green methanol further strengthens the move toward decarbonised maritime transport, reflecting THI’s growing focus on eco-friendly practices.

Innovative Design for Global Operations

With a length of 229 metres, the vessel’s design accommodates both shallow draft and low air draft conditions, allowing smooth entry into various global ports, including Kamsar Port in Guinea. This makes the vessel not only environmentally advanced but also highly versatile in operational deployment.

Commitment to Sustainable Innovation

The launch ceremony served as a powerful recognition of THI’s skilled workforce and their dedication to technological advancement. Mr. Yasuaki Seto, President of THI, reaffirmed the company’s core values of “Safety, Stability, and Sustainability,” noting their mission to lead the maritime industry through innovation and responsibility.

Shaping the Future of Global Shipbuilding

This achievement underscores TSUNEISHI’s role as a leader in next-generation shipbuilding. THI continues to drive progress within the maritime industry by investing in clean technology, supporting climate goals, and delivering long-term value to clients and communities worldwide.
