The Philippines and South Korea agreed to enhance maritime cooperation amid growing concerns over China’s activities in the South China Sea. Presidents Ferdinand Marcos and Yoon Suk Yeol met in Manila and committed to closer collaboration between their nations’ coast guards, reports VOA.

Strengthening Coast Guard Relations

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol emphasized the importance of strengthening ties in tackling transnational crime, information sharing, and conducting search and rescue operations. This is aimed at boosting maritime security in contested waters.

Focus on Peace and Stability

Yoon stressed the importance of peace and stability in the South China Sea. It states that both countries share a common understanding of the need for a rules-based maritime order.

“Our two countries will continue to work together to establish a rules-based maritime order and for the freedom of navigation and overflight according to the principles of international law in the South China Sea,” he added.

Concerns Over China’s Actions

South Korea has voiced concerns over tensions in the South China Sea. In March, Seoul expressed “grave concern” over China’s aggressive use of water cannons against Philippine vessels.

It underscored the escalating situation in the region.

China’s Assertive Presence

China has long sought to expand its control over disputed areas in the South China Sea, despite international rulings against its claims.

The nation has built artificial islands equipped with military installations. The Philippines says is used to harass its ships and block fishing activities.

Bilateral Agreements on Critical Resources and Energy

During the meeting, the Philippines and South Korea signed cooperation agreements. It covered critical raw material supply chains and a feasibility study.

It was on reviving the Philippines’ Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, indicating a broader scope of collaboration beyond maritime concerns.

Philippine President Marcos’ Remarks on Geopolitical Complexity

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos highlighted the increasing complexity of the geopolitical environment and the importance of fostering a rules-based order.

He said, “As the geopolitical environment is only becoming more complex, we must work together to achieve prosperity for our peoples and to promote a rules-based order.”
