Pilbara Ports has advised of new procedures for marine waste offloading services for vessels calling at the Port of Port Hedland, effective from 28 October 2025. Under the revised arrangement with the current waste management provider, each vessel visiting the Port will be guaranteed access to a minimum of one cubic metre of waste disposal per visit.
Waste Categories Covered
The guaranteed service covers specific categories of waste as defined under MARPOL Annex V (2022/01). These categories include:
- Category A: Plastics
- Category C: Domestic waste
- Category E: Incinerator ashes
- Category F: Operational waste
- Category H: Fishing gear
- Category I: Electronic waste (E-waste)
- Category J: Cargo residues (non-harmful to the marine environment)
- Category K: Cargo residues (harmful to the marine environment)
New Offloading Procedures
Effective 28 October 2025, vessels must adhere to the following procedural requirements for waste offloading:
- Prior Contact: Vessels must contact the waste service provider at least 24 hours before the intended time of offloading.
- Collection Scheduling: The provider will confirm a specific collection time, which will occur only during daylight hours.
- Volume Confirmation and Payment: The provider will confirm the amount of waste disposal covered under the Pilbara Ports arrangement (the minimum 1 cubic metre). The provider will also advise on the cost for any additional volume that exceeds the allocated amount, which must be paid for by the vessel or its shipping agent. Vessels must confirm or update their discharge volumes before collection commences.
- Required Documentation: After the waste has been offloaded, ships will be issued a Waste Delivery Receipt. This receipt must be accurately recorded in the vessel’s Garbage Record Book.
