Pirate Attacks Bulk Carrier in Indian Ocean

1950

On October 16, a bulk carrier was attacked by armed pirates who approached the vessel in a speedboat.

What happened?

An unnamed bulk carrier was attacked by four pirates armed with AK-47 who approached the vessel using a speedboat. The bulk carrier was travelling east of Mogadishu, Somali when they came under a pirate attack.

Alarm raised

The Captain of the vessel issued an alert to the local authorities and activated the SASS and instructed all the crew members to muster in the citadel.

Armed guards open fire

The pirates opened fire when they noticed armed guards onboard the bulk carrier. The armed guards onboard the vessel returned fire and clearly outnumbered the pirates.

The pirates aborted the mission and started moving away from the vessel. All the crew members onboard the bulk carrier were reported to be safe.
