On November 6, a Bermuda registered tanker was attacked by pirates near Nigeria.
What happened?
The Bermudian-registered LNG tanker ‘River Niger’ was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria.
The armed pirates approached the vessel by a motorboat and open fired on the tanker. The security personnel onboard the vessel return fired and were able to successfully thwart the attack. The pirates abandoned the mission and fled from the scene.
Navy alerted
The Department of Marine and Ports received a report from the LNG tanker about the attack. The Nigerian navy was dispatched in an attempt to trace the source of the attack while the River Niger continued under escort of a security vessel, for pilot and entry into the port of Bonny, Nigeria.
Investigation launched
An investigation has been launched into the incident to determine the source of the attack. Fortunately, no one was injured during the attack.
