- A product tanker was boarded and robbed southwest of Nova Sintra, Cape Verde in a significant escalation in terms of the way pirates treat seafarers off West Africa.
- The tanker was boarded by 10 suspects armed with AK-47s. The suspects reportedly damaged communication equipment, took control of the bridge, and locked all crewmembers.
A product tanker was attacked by pirates 363 nautical miles south-southwest of Nova Sintra, Cabo Verde, on 17 May, 2024, reports Safety4sea as per an ICC International Maritime Bureau report.
According the report, ten armed pirates wielding AK-47 rifles stormed the vessel while it was underway, seizing control of the bridge and forcing all crew members to gather there. The pirates proceeded to restrain the crew by tying their hands and legs.

Afterwards, the pirates ordered the second and fourth engineers to stop engines and drift with the intention of stealing the cargo and bunkers. While waiting for the off take vessel the pirates stole crew and ship properties.
The pirates also claimed to have rigged explosive devices on all exit points. They warned that the crew could only emerge after a two-hour period. However, upon emerging, the crew discovered no traces of either pirates or explosives.
Before making their escape, the pirates inflicted substantial damage to vital equipment onboard. Communication systems, internet connectivity, navigation instruments, and crucial air control pipes for the main engine and cylinder oil flow valves were all compromised.
The crew safely navigated the vessel to the nearest port, and no cargo or bunkers were stolen.
