On November 27, plans to tow a runaway fuel barge was postponed due to poor weather conditions.
What happened?
The fuel barge ‘Zidell Marine 277’ was reportedly planned to be safely towed by the tow boat ‘Gulf Cajun’ when its restraints broke off and the tug started scuttling due to poor weather conditions.
The tow boat was assisted through the Queen Charlotte Sound by the tug ‘Jake Shearer’ when it broke apart from the fuel barge in rough seas. Since the tugboat was not in a condition to assist the vessel a new tug ‘Gulf Cajun’ was called in.
Poor weather conditions:
Poor weather condition has reportedly kept the tug out of action and prevented them from escorting the barge to the original place of refuge and they set off for a new location at the north end of Campbell Island.
Oil containing booms have been placed around the loaded barge as a precautionary measure to contain any oil spill. An aerial sweep was also conducted by a Coast Guard flight over the area overseen by an Environmental Emergency Response Officer. Furthermore, a Canadian Coast Guard vessel has also been stationed nearby for monitoring the vessel.
