Port Authority Of NSW Achieves Dual Sustainability Milestones

7

The Port Authority of New South Wales (NSW) has set a new benchmark for maritime sustainability by becoming the first Australian port certified by Green Marine. In addition, it has reached Silver Partner status in the NSW Government’s Sustainability Advantage program.

These recognitions underscore the authority’s commitment to reducing environmental impact, embedding sustainable practices, and working toward net zero targets.

Green Marine Certification: A Global Recognition

Green Marine’s voluntary environmental certification program evaluates ports against strict performance metrics such as air emissions, water quality, waste management, community relations, and noise control. By achieving certification, the Port Authority of NSW joins a select group of global ports recognized for sustainable operations. This highlights the authority’s proactive role in environmental stewardship across all six of its commercial port locations.

Advancing in NSW’s Sustainability Advantage Program

Building on its Bronze Partner recognition in 2021, the port authority has now advanced to Silver Partner status. This achievement reflects a comprehensive integration of sustainability across its operations ranging from defining and disclosing Scope 3 emissions, progressing towards Scope 1 and 2 net zero goals, and adopting a climate change risk assessment and adaptation plan. The recognition highlights the authority’s continuous improvement in resource efficiency and data-driven decision-making.

Investment in Shore Power Infrastructure

One of the standout initiatives is the investment in shore power technology at White Bay Cruise Terminal, which will allow ships to plug into renewable energy sources while docked. This project, a first-of-its-kind in the Southern Hemisphere, is set for completion in 2026.

Combined with the milestone of reducing Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions to zero in January 2024, the investment reflects the authority’s long-term vision for decarbonization.

Leadership in Sustainability

According to Amy Beaumont, Port Authority Group Executive, the dual recognition signals that the organization is serious about sustainability outcomes. By embedding green practices into its operations and culture, the authority is on track to meet its net zero by 2040 target while maintaining its role as a responsible steward of the marine environment.

The Port Authority of NSW’s recognition by both Green Marine and the NSW Government’s Sustainability Advantage program demonstrates a robust commitment to environmental leadership. From achieving net zero milestones to pioneering shore power technology, the authority is setting an example for ports worldwide. These achievements not only strengthen its sustainability credentials but also reinforce its role in shaping the future of greener maritime operations.
