The Port Authority of NSW has partnered with Avcon Projects to create a cutting-edge onshore pilot ladder training facility, designed to enhance the safety and efficiency of marine operations. Featuring a full nine-meter ladder suspended over shipping containers and a step-off platform, this facility aims to replicate the challenges of boarding commercial vessels at sea.

Commitment to Safety and Skill Development

Philip Holliday, CEO of Port Authority, emphasized the organization’s dedication to safety by investing in this innovative training facility. “The safety of our marine operations team is our highest priority,” Holliday stated, highlighting the importance of equipping teams with the necessary tools for safe vessel transfers. This initiative not only enhances operational excellence but also offers significant cost savings by reducing reliance on external training programs.

Enhanced Accessibility for Training

Sharad Bhasin, Harbour Master of Port Kembla and South Coast, noted the facility’s role in improving ladder training accessibility for pilots and boat crews who face diverse conditions at sea. The facility is designed for a wide range of personnel, including pilots, vessel traffic service operators, and pilot boat crews, ensuring that all individuals requiring ladder training can do so effectively. “The new ladder training facility will improve the skill in our teams, ensuring safer and more efficient transfers,” Bhasin added, reinforcing the commitment to safety and proficiency in marine operations.
