Port Houston had a strong April, handling 387,478 TEUs at its public terminals—a 20 per cent increase over April 2024 and a new monthly record.
This follows a record-setting March, bringing year-to-date (YTD) volume to 1.45 million TEUs, up 4 per cent from last year.
Port Houston reports strong April volumes
Loaded imports rose 21 per cent and exports increased 16 per cent, totalling 316,543 TEUs—a 19 per cent year-over-year (YoY) gain.
Though a smaller segment, refrigerated container imports surged 46 per cent, driven by the peak citrus and fruit season.
At the multipurpose terminals, steel imports jumped 40 per cent in April and are up 17 per cent YTD.
General cargo is up 18 per cent YTD, contributing to a 3 per cent rise in total tonnage, which reached 18.08 million tonnes through April.
Charlie Jenkins, CEO of Port Houston, said: “We are staying busy across our facilities, working with our partners to make sure every piece of cargo and every box moves quickly to get to its final destination.”
In March, Port Houston handled 386,864 TEUs—an impressive 7 per cent increase over March 2023 and the highest March volume in its history.
