  • $25M grant awarded for hydrogen fueling station.
  • Collaboration with Linde Inc., GTI Energy, and others.
  • Development of Bayport Hydrogen Refueling Station for trucks.
  • Supports net-zero emissions by 2050 and U.S. decarbonization goals.
  • Linde to lead design and operation, enhancing hydrogen infrastructure.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have awarded nearly $25 million in grant funding to Port Houston. Announced on January 10th, the grant facilitates a collaborative project with Linde Inc., GTI Energy, Argonne National Laboratory, and the Center for Houston’s Future. The primary goal is to construct the Bayport Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) in Bayport, Texas, to support heavy-duty truck fueling with innovative, pipeline-based hydrogen infrastructure, according to Port Houston.

Innovative Hydrogen Refueling Station

The Bayport HRS is designed to provide high-throughput, convenient, and publicly accessible fueling options, making hydrogen an affordable and practical energy source for heavy-duty trucks. Linde Inc., a global leader in hydrogen production and infrastructure, will lead the station’s design, construction, and operation, ensuring efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Advancing Sustainability Goals

This project aligns with Port Houston’s Sustainability Action Plan, which targets net-zero emissions by 2050. It also supports the U.S. National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization, the National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy, and the National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap.

Port Houston CEO Charlie Jenkins emphasized the port’s commitment to fostering sustainability, resilience, and quality of life, while Chief Infrastructure Officer Rich Byrnes highlighted the port’s strategy of promoting clean transportation and de-risking decarbonization initiatives.

A Collaborative Energy Transition

Linde Inc. leverages its expertise in hydrogen infrastructure, while partners GTI Energy, Argonne National Laboratory, and the Center for Houston’s Future bring their strengths in energy innovation, modeling, and transition strategy. This partnership highlights Houston’s leadership in the clean hydrogen economy and its commitment to driving decarbonization in heavy-duty transport.

A Strong Start for 2025

In 2024, Port Houston’s grants team secured nearly $57 million for sustainability projects. This $25 million grant represents a strong start to 2025, reinforcing Port Houston’s leadership in clean energy transitions and community-focused sustainability efforts. The Bayport HRS project exemplifies the power of collaboration to build a sustainable and resilient future.
