Port Houston Sets New Records with Double-Digit Growth in July 2025

Port Houston had a record-breaking July in 2025, with double-digit growth in key sectors. This strong performance has led to new year-to-date highs and demonstrates the port’s continued capacity for growth.

Standout Performance in July

Container volumes for July were up a remarkable 21% from the previous year, reaching 392,829 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This was one of the strongest single-month performances on record. Year-to-date, Port Houston has handled 2,562,506 TEUs, marking the fastest-paced year in its history. Loaded imports surged by 19% and loaded exports, particularly resins, increased by 18%.

Growth in General Cargo and Strategic Investments

General cargo volumes at the public terminals rose 10% year-to-date through July, with steel imports showing a significant 41% increase in July alone. Total tonnage across the public facilities reached 32,647,865 short tons. In response to this growth, Port Houston is making important investments, such as Wharf 7 at the Bayport Container Terminal, which is on track for an early completion in December.

Commitment to Sustainability

Port Houston has received national recognition for its commitment to sustainability. The Houston Ship Channel Expansion, known as Project 11, was awarded the Environmental Excellence Award. The project successfully repurposed over 15 million cubic yards of dredged material to create new bird islands, marshes, and oyster reefs. The expansion also allows the Bayport Terminal to accommodate ships up to 17,000 TEUs.
