Port Houston has once again experienced a significant increase in loaded exports through its Bayport and Barbours Cut Container Terminals, says an article published on port houston website.

September Export Surge

Port Houston experienced a record-breaking increase in loaded exports during September, marking a significant milestone in its history. Handling 124,739 loaded export TEUs, this surge, a 21% increase compared to the same period in 2022, is primarily attributed to the soaring demand for resins.

Notably, Port Houston holds a dominant 59% share of the resin export market in the United States, exporting various types such as PE, PVC, and PP to key destinations like China, Brazil, and Belgium.

Import Challenges

Despite the success in exports, the port faced a decline in import volumes during September. Loaded import volumes dropped by 12% compared to the previous year, contributing to an 8% year-to-date decrease.

Notably, the decline impacted general cargo and steel imports, although there was a positive 65% increase in auto import units year-to-date.

Infrastructure Investment

Roger Guenther, the Executive Director at Port Houston, emphasized the port’s commitment to investing in terminal infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the global supply chain.

Despite the fluctuations in the global economy, the port is focused on aligning with its partners to prepare for the future, ensuring they can effectively cater to their customers’ needs in the long term.

Houston International Maritime Conference (HIMC)

In line with its commitment to industry leadership, Port Houston is hosting the second-annual Houston International Maritime Conference.

Industry leaders, including BCOs, carriers, freight forwarders, and others, are gathering to discuss a wide array of topics, from ocean carrier alliances to technology and sustainability. This initiative aims to foster collaboration and address the evolving landscape of the maritime and logistics sectors.

Economic Contribution

Port Houston stands as an essential economic engine not just for the Houston region but also for the state of Texas and the nation at large. The Houston Ship Channel complex, housing both public and private terminals, significantly impacts the nation’s economic activity, supporting millions of jobs and contributing billions to the state and national GDP.
