Mauritius Maritime Training Academy (MMTA) in Pointe aux Sables conducted the Open Day event on 13 &14th of August, aimed at motivating the local community about offshore and shore-based career paths in the maritime sector.

The Minister said that the blue economy sector is called upon to become one of the major pillars of the economy.  He recalled that port development is high on government’s agenda with the expansion of the port area from Grande Rivière North West to Baie du Tombeau, with Port Louis harbour positioned to become an important maritime transshipment/bunkering/seafood hub.  These projects will in turn create more job opportunities in the maritime sector, he said.

Moreover, Mr Koonjoo reiterated the need to train more people to join the shipping sector both locally and globally.  The demand exists for around 5000 jobs annually and both the public and the private sectors are engaging themselves to ensure that training is given so that job seekers can embrace a career in the maritime sector, he said.
