  • Norne and the Port of Aalborg are developing a CO₂ reception facility designed to handle 15 million tonnes annually, supported by an EU CEF Energy grant.
  • FEED studies and environmental assessments are complete, with construction set to begin on a new 500-meter quay for CO₂ infrastructure.
  • The project holds EU PCI status, streamlining permitting and opening access to further funding opportunities.
  • Port and Norne leaders emphasize the project’s role in decarbonization and attracting new industries to Aalborg.

Norne Carbon Storage Hub, a Fidelis New Energy company, and the Port of Aalborg have formalized agreements for a CO₂ reception facility capable of managing 15 million tonnes annually. Since forming an exclusive partnership in 2021, the two parties have advanced their shared vision with support from the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Energy grant. This funding will help develop a new quay to support CO₂ reception operations, serving multiple Danish onshore and near-shore storage sites and industrial applications focused on carbon reuse and decarbonized fuel production.

Construction Begins on Norne CO₂ Hub

Norne has finalized front-end engineering and design (FEED) studies for its CO₂ reception facility and the connecting pipeline to nearby storage sites, alongside comprehensive environmental and ecological assessments. The project’s designation as a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Union in 2023 has streamlined the permitting process, accelerating the Environmental Impact Assessment for the pipeline.

With the exclusive lease agreement and CEF Energy grant in place, Norne and the Port of Aalborg are set to begin construction of a 500-meter quay, covering 60,000 square meters, to house the CO₂ reception infrastructure.

The new facility will enhance access to safe and cost-effective onshore and nearshore CO₂ storage for European emitters, leveraging Aalborg’s strategic deepwater port. The PCI status not only affirms the project’s national and regional importance but also grants it permission to prioritize and eligibility for further CEF Energy funding. Norne is actively pursuing additional support to expand its role in the growing CO₂ value chain.

Strategic Vision for CO₂ Hub and Industrial Growth at Port of Aalborg

Kristian Thulesen Dahl, CEO of the Port of Aalborg, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership, highlighting the port’s role in supporting cost-effective and secure CO₂ storage both onshore and nearshore. He noted that the collaboration with Norne not only advances the port’s capabilities but also enhances its potential to attract new industries seeking decarbonization services.

Lars Bo Christiansen, President of Norne, echoed this sentiment, pointing to the strong cooperation with the Port of Aalborg, the European Union, and Danish authorities since 2021. He underscored Norne’s plans to scale beyond the current 15 million tonnes per year capacity and to support future industrial projects that align with Europe’s climate goals.
