This upward trend builds on a strong first quarter fueled by container transport and now extends to encompass other product categories. The positive performance is a testament to the port’s resilience in a challenging global climate.
Container Traffic Remains Strong
Container throughput continues to be a bright spot for the port. The volume of containerized cargo increased by 6.8% in tonnes and 4.1% in TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), reaching 6.665 million TEUs. This growth is attributed to a shift in shipping routes, with more vessels navigating around the Cape of Good Hope.
Diversified Growth Across Sectors
Beyond containers, other product categories are showing signs of recovery. Conventional breakbulk cargo experienced an upward trend, with a notable improvement in the second quarter compared to the first. Dry bulk cargo volumes remained stable with a slight increase of 0.4%, a significant improvement from the 12.2% decline witnessed in the first three months of the year.
The roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) sector witnessed a minor decrease of 5.7%. This decline can be attributed to ongoing congestion at terminals and changes in car manufacturers’ business models. While liquid bulk cargo initially experienced a slight dip in the first quarter, it managed to recover and show a 0.7% growth by the end of the second quarter.
Sustainability Efforts Take Center Stage
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges remains committed to its sustainability goals. The launch of the world’s first methanol-powered tugboat, the “Methatug,” and the previously introduced hydrogen-powered “Hydrotug” exemplify this commitment. Additionally, the port is pioneering the energy transition in the maritime sector with the installation of Belgium’s first shore power connection for ocean-going vessels. The port is also actively expanding its electric truck charging infrastructure.
