The Port of Great Yarmouth is gearing up for a major expansion, with exciting plans in the works to build a new deep-water terminal designed to support large-scale construction and energy infrastructure projects, reports Peel Ports.

Southern Terminal Development to Meet Growing Demand

With an increasing need from developers and contractors involved in both onshore and offshore projects, the port operator is pushing ahead with plans to enhance the Southern Terminal at the Outer Harbour. This development will feature:

  1. 350 meters of new quay space
  2. A RoRo (Roll on/Roll off) ramp
  3. A heavy lift pad
  4. About 10 hectares of reinforced outdoor storage area

Strategic Location and Unrestricted Access

Great Yarmouth is recognised as one of the deepest non-tidally restricted ports along the UK’s east coast. The port’s current facilities are already playing a crucial role in supporting significant infrastructure projects, including Sizewell C and various offshore energy initiatives in the southern North Sea.

Port Director Highlights Regional Importance

Commenting on the expansion, Richard Goffin, Port Director, said: “The Port of Great Yarmouth has been supporting major offshore and inland and offshore energy projects for over six decades, and we are seeing that demand continue to grow, with real momentum now building behind some major projects.”

He emphasised the port’s strategic advantages: “Our team’s expertise is second to none, and the port is ideally located to support the construction of vital infrastructure projects and is less restricted than its east coast competitors who are impacted by items such as locks, shallow approach channels and road transport bottlenecks.”

Goffin added that the expansion will strengthen the port’s national role: “This development will help us meet our objective of playing an increasingly central role in the future of UK infrastructure, and have a positive impact on our regional and national economies.”
