Overview of the Three-Year Action Plan (2024-2026)
The Port of Guangzhou, the world’s fifth-largest port, has introduced a comprehensive three-year action plan aimed at strengthening its position as a global shipping hub. The plan outlines ambitious targets, including achieving a throughput of 700 million tons and handling 27 million standard containers by 2026.
Key Objectives and Milestones
By 2026, the Port of Guangzhou aims to handle 800,000 standard containers through sea-rail multimodal transportation, manage a vehicle turnover of 1.6 million units, and secure a total investment of 15 billion yuan ($2.1 billion) in port and fixed-asset development.
Strategic Importance in the Greater Bay Area
The action plan is a strategic move to develop a port-centered economic zone, foster new quality productive forces, and solidify the port’s role as a pivotal global shipping hub. It also aims to elevate the port as a key area for deepening reforms and expanding the open market within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Progress and Growth Drivers Since 2015
This new plan marks the fourth such initiative since 2015. As of the end of 2023, the Port of Guangzhou had already seen significant growth, with throughput reaching 675 million tons and container turnover at 25.41 million units. Between 2021 and 2023, the port expanded its network by adding 42 new ocean shipping lines, bringing the total number of container shipping routes to 268. The introduction of new growth drivers such as auto vehicle transportation and sea-rail multimodal transport has significantly contributed to the port’s expansion, positioning these sectors as new engines of growth for the future.
