At the China International Import Expo in Shanghai, the Port of Hamburg and Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) made a case for green transformation within global supply chains. Focusing on international cooperation, sustainable logistics solutions initiated by thePort of Hamburg drove global sustainability forward. Many visitors at the joint stand expressed a strong interest, reports Port of Hamburg.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

The change towards more sustainable logistics can only succeed at the international level. Accordingly, the Port of Hamburg is presenting itself at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai this year under the motto ‘’Sustainable Development in the Context of the Energy Transition”. “For years, the Chinese market has been the largest for the Port of Hamburg. China is Hamburg’s top customer with a container throughput of over two million TEU per year. To further strengthen our valued relationships and establish new ones, it is essential for us to maintain a local presence”, says Volker Werner, Director of Sales at HHLA.

A European Leader in Sustainable Rail

Setting its mark as an international energy hub, Germany’s largest All-Purpose Port is on its way to greener transportation infrastructure through sustainability-oriented rail connections to Central and Southeastern Europe: under this main heading, the 5th German Logistics Roundtable, staged by the Hamburg Liaison Office (HLO), Port of Hamburg Marketing, HHLA, TSIT and DB Cargo Transasia, not only turned the spotlight on the themes of environment and energy.

Over 60 guests attended. “The strong interest from guests at our exhibition stand and the roundtable demonstrates that we are on the right track with our focus on sustainability at CIIE. In this context, we can work with our partners to define and develop sustainable supply chains”, says Axel Mattern, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM).

Strengthening Sino-German Relations

It is seen in the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), COSCO Shipping Lines Co., Ltd., and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd., reinforcing the deal between Hamburg and Shanghai. The Memorandum of Understanding was

established at the North Bund Forum 2024, indicating a reduction in shipping activities’ environmental impact while promoting sustainable development in maritime transport. This is a long-standing relationship between the ports of Hamburg and Shanghai, initiated by a Sister Port Agreement in 2004, making clear Hamburg’s continued commitment to sustainable partnerships in China.

Diverse Offerings

Representatives of Port of Hamburg Marketing, Hamburg Liaison Office, HHLA, and newcomer TSIT are coming together at the common stand. TSIT offers bonded warehouse and transport logistics across Europe And contributes a new sustainable offer to the portfolio presented within the framework of the expo.
