The Port of Hueneme will soon complete its transformative North Terminal Shoreside Power Project, thanks to an additional $4 million in federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funding. The project aims to drastically cut vessel emissions and improve local air quality.
A Milestone for Sustainability and Community Health
The only deepwater port between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, the Port of Hueneme is advancing a vital infrastructure upgrade that will allow berthed vessels to plug into shore power and shut off diesel engines. This move significantly reduces harmful emissions like nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, enhancing air quality for port-adjacent communities.
“We’re thrilled to receive this critical funding for our Shoreside Power Project,” said Jess J. Ramirez, President of the Oxnard Harbor District/Port of Hueneme.
Strengthening Infrastructure and Storm Resilience
The $4 million in new funding, approved by the Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC), supplements earlier grants totaling $11.9 million. It enables the Port to complete weatherproofing, install safety systems, and extend the lifespan of the power infrastructure — essential enhancements following storm-related delays in December 2023.
“The Port has always been known for its resilience, and we will continue to innovate and move forward in the face of challenges because this power system is important for port-adjacent communities,” said Kristin Decas, CEO and Director of the Port of Hueneme.
