- New Incentive Programs Aim to Modernize Cargo Operations.
- SWIFT Initiative to Support Green Port Transformation.
- Zero-Emission Equipment and Cleaner Harbor Craft Get Funding Boost.
The Port of Long Beach (POLB) has revealed two new incentive programs worth $57.4 million to speed up port operations emissions reductions. Both schemes are intended to facilitate the uptake of zero-emissions cargo-handling equipment and cleaner harbour craft. The funding is within the System-Wide Investment in Freight Transport (SWIFT), which is an initiative under the California State Transportation Agency’s Port and Freight Infrastructure Program. SWIFT is intended to upgrade ports, boost freight efficiency, and reduce environmental effects on surrounding communities, reports Container News.
Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
POLB CEO Mario Cordero emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “This program is all about making strides in operational efficiency and sustainability, rapidly and responsibly. It is a reflection of not only our dedication to innovation but also our responsibility towards the community and the environment.” The $57.4 million in incentives is divided equally between two key programs.
Zero-Emission Terminal Transformation Program
- $28.7 million of incentives for spurring the purchase of zero-emission cargo-handling gear.
- Financing also covers the procurement of battery-electric charging equipment for use.
- All equipment for handling cargo tested under the program shall be manually operated.
Commercial Harbor Craft Incentive Program
$28.7 million to fund upgrades that meet higher environmental standards for harbour craft.
The program will cut greenhouse gas emissions from commercial harbour ships that sail in and out of the port.
The initiatives are a key step toward making cleaner port operations a reality, upholding POLB’s dedication to environmental stewardship while enhancing operating efficiency.
