According to Long Beach Business Journal , The Port of Long Beach reached a new milestone in September, handling a record-breaking 828,499 20-foot cargo containers as retailers ramp up inventory ahead of the holiday season. This marked a slight increase from the previous record, set two years earlier, as the port saw a surge in inbound goods through its critical trans-Pacific trade routes.

CEO Confident in Continued Growth

Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero expressed optimism about the sustained growth, noting that the port is well-equipped to manage the peak shipping season. “We have plenty of room across our terminals as the peak shipping season drives a record amount of cargo through this critical gateway for trans-Pacific trade,” Cordero said, predicting continued strong performance as retailers prepare for the winter holidays.

2024 Sees Significant Cargo Surge

The port’s record-setting September follows a year of increased shipping activity, with 6.9 million containers moved in the first nine months of 2024. This represents a nearly 19% increase compared to the same period last year. The third quarter of 2024 also set a new record for the busiest quarter, surpassing the previous high from 2022.

Smooth Sailing Through Busy Season

Despite the busy season, officials expect the Port of Long Beach to avoid major delays, even as ports on the East and Gulf coasts face potential disruptions due to a looming labor contract deadline. Long Beach Harbor Commission President Bonnie Lowenthal credited collaboration with industry and labor partners for the port’s ability to handle large volumes of cargo efficiently and sustainably.

Looking Ahead to Continued Success

The Port of Long Beach remains a key player in the national supply chain, delivering reliable service and managing peak shipping volumes while maintaining a focus on sustainability. With a strong holiday shipping season expected, the port looks forward to closing out the year with continued growth and operational efficiency.
