Port of Long Beach Trade Rises for Ninth Consecutive Month

Trade activity at the Port of Long Beach continued its upward trend in February, marking the ninth consecutive month of growth. Retailers have been actively moving goods ahead of anticipated tariffs on certain imported products and materials, contributing to the surge in cargo volumes, reports Port of Long Beach.

Increase in Cargo Movement

Dockworkers and terminal operators handled 765,385 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in February, reflecting a 13.4% increase compared to the same month last year. Imports saw a rise of 11.8%, reaching 368,669 TEUs, while exports increased by 2.9% to 90,026 TEUs. Additionally, the movement of empty containers surged by 19.1%, totalling 306,690 TEUs.

Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero reaffirmed the Port’s commitment to remaining competitive and expanding operations, emphasizing the role of customer service and infrastructure investments in sustaining long-term growth. “No matter the situation, the Port will remain competitive by delivering exceptional customer service and moving ahead with capital improvement projects that will allow us to grow well into the future,” said Cordero. “We thank our industry partners for choosing to do business with us.”

Efforts to Sustain Cargo Movement

Long Beach Harbor Commission President Bonnie Lowenthal praised the dockworkers, marine terminal operators, and industry partners for their role in handling high cargo volumes. She highlighted the Port’s ongoing commitment to efficient, reliable, and sustainable cargo movement. “Our dockworkers, marine terminal operators and all of our industry partners are processing an extraordinary amount of cargo through this vital trans-Pacific gateway,” said Lowenthal. “We will continue to rely on our reputation of moving cargo quickly, reliably and sustainably while providing outstanding customer service.”

Strong Start to 2025

The Port of Long Beach has handled 1,718,118 TEUs in the first two months of 2025, reflecting a 27.4% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This strong growth trend underscores the Port’s importance as a key trans-Pacific trade gateway and its ability to adapt to changing market conditions.
