The Port of Los Angeles had a record-breaking start to 2025, processing 924,245 TEUs in January. This marks the port’s busiest January in its 117-year history, representing an 8% increase in cargo volume compared to the same period last year, reports Port Of Los Angeles.

Strong Performance

The Port of Los Angeles reported strong container volumes in January 2025, with Executive Director Gene Seroka highlighting an average of over 927,000 container units handled monthly for the past seven months.

He attributed January’s strong performance to a robust economy, importers anticipating tariffs, and pre-Lunar New Year cargo. Seroka emphasized the port’s efficiency in handling these volumes without delays and acknowledged the contributions of various stakeholders. California Retailers Association President Rachel Michelin discussed the impact of tariffs on retailers. January’s loaded imports reached 483,831 TEUs (a 9.5% increase), loaded exports were 113,271 TEUs (a 10.5% decrease), and empty container processing jumped 14% to 327,143 TEUs.
