Port Of Melbourne And Shanghai Strengthen Green Shipping Ties

The Port of Melbourne and the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission (SMTC) have formalized a new phase of collaboration to advance maritime decarbonization, signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on October 19 in China. The agreement builds on an 18-year partnership that began in 2006 and aims to align both ports with global clean shipping initiatives.

A Partnership Rooted in Sustainability

Supported by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40), the MoU focuses on reducing emissions across the maritime supply chain in line with the Clydebank Declaration. The partnership will unite key industry players including Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), COSCO SHIPPING Lines, HAMR Energy, and ABEL Energy to develop and implement practical measures for cleaner, more efficient shipping operations.

Key Objectives of the MoU

Under the agreement, the two ports will:

  • Collaborate with industry partners to reduce the environmental impact of maritime transport.

  • Promote cleaner technologies and renewable energy, integrating sustainable best practices in port and shipping activities.

  • Support the adoption of clean-fuel-powered vessels, particularly on routes between Shanghai and Melbourne.

  • Work with energy suppliers to strengthen low-carbon fuel production, improve efficiency, and establish robust supply chain systems for renewable energy storage and distribution.

Strengthening Trade and Climate Cooperation

China remains the Port of Melbourne’s largest trading partner, representing 50% of container imports and 20% of exports. With such strong trade flows, the partnership holds significant potential to reduce emissions and set a benchmark for green shipping between the Asia-Pacific’s busiest ports.

The MoU between the Port of Melbourne and SMTC marks a major milestone in regional maritime cooperation and environmental leadership. By combining innovation, collaboration, and shared sustainability goals, the two ports aim to drive progress toward a cleaner, low-carbon maritime future.
