Port of Melbourne Reports Strong Growth in January 2025 Trade

The Port of Melbourne posted a year-on-year (YoY) growth in container throughput for January 2025 at 289,000 TEUs, reports Port News.

Import and Export Volume Growth

  1. Full container imports (excluding Bass Strait) grew to 115,000 TEUs, led by robust demand for furniture, home appliances, and paperboard.
  2. Full container exports (excluding Bass Strait) grew to 46,000 TEUs, showing positive trade momentum.

Increase in Non-Container Trade

The port’s non-container trade for January amounted to 2.01 million revenue tonnes, up by 16% YoY (282,000 revenue tonnes) from January 2024.

The Port of Melbourne’s performance conforms to Australia’s expected annual growth in port throughput by 3.5%, driven by growing trade with the Asia-Pacific region.
