In September 2024, the Port of Melbourne recorded increased total container throughput. It reached 284,000 TEUs, surpassing September 2023’s figures, reports Container News.
Growth in Full Container Imports
“Full container imports (excluding Bass Strait) saw a growth over the previous year,” with significant increases in furniture, domestic appliances, and paperboard volumes, contributing to the port’s overall import surge.
Rise in Full Container Exports
“Full container exports (excluding Bass Strait) also increased from the prior year,” with cotton, timber, hay, chaff & fodder, and wheat among the key export items showing notable year-over-year growth.
Despite higher throughput, total empty container movements declined in September compared to last year, indicating a drop in empty container returns.
