Port of Melbourne Sees Drop in Container Throughput Amid Congestion

The Port of Melbourne recorded a 6% year-on-year decline in container throughput in August 2024, handling around 252,000 TEUs, reports Container News.

The drop was driven by lower import volumes of consumer goods and a notable fall in agricultural exports like wheat and cotton.

Adding to the challenge, operations at DP World’s West Swanson Terminal were severely disrupted due to ongoing landside construction, which cut truck grid capacity by 35%. This led to long delays, with truck turnaround times exceeding four hours.

Industry bodies like the Container Transport Alliance Australia are urging improved infrastructure and planning to prevent further strain on Australia’s busiest container port.
