Port of New Orleans Gets $1M for Security Upgrades

The Port of New Orleans has been awarded $1,040,583 from FEMA’s Port Security Grant Program. This money will be used to make considerable improvements in security structures coupled with emergency responses at the port, reports Container News.

Surveillance and Emergency Response Improvements

The funding source is to improve the infrastructure and the technologies of surveillance of HPD. In addition, it will be necessary to provide such equipment as will aid in the operations during an emergency. The work will be done by August 31, 2027.

FEMA’s Port Security

The Port Security Grant Program by 2024 saw FEMA dispensing $90 million in funds to agencies responsible for fortifying port infrastructure against terrorist and other risks including natural disasters, and critical emergencies.

Leaders Support FEMA

Ronald Wendel, Jr., Acting President and CEO of Port NOLA and Acting CEO of the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad, thanked FEMA for this continued support: “This is an important milestone in further developing and enhancing Port NOLA’s security structures.”

Previous FEMA Grants to Port NOLA

The Emergency Operations Center of Port Nola command centre for emergencies like hurricanes received $947,280 in FEMA funding for 2023 to improve the facility. Since 2020, FEMA has issued grants in the amount of $2,502,827 to improve security and response in cases of emergencies at the port.
