The Port of New York and New Jersey reported a significant uptick in cargo activity in the first half of 2025, reflecting continued economic recovery and resilient logistics operations. With a 4.9% year-over-year increase in total cargo volume, the port has solidified its position as a major gateway for trade on the US East Coast.

Cargo Volume Surges Past Pre-Pandemic Levels

Between January and June 2025, the port processed 4,417,282 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), representing a 20.9% increase over pre-pandemic figures from 2019. It ranked as the second-busiest port in the United States for loaded containers during both the month of June and the first half of the year. Specifically, it handled 2,945,962 loaded TEUs in this period, underscoring its crucial role in the national and global supply chain.

Regional Mobility Recovers as Traffic Volumes Normalize

Traffic across the agency’s bridges and tunnels held steady with 2024 levels and closely mirrored those from 2019. This stability signals a continued recovery in regional mobility, with passenger and freight movement rebounding to pre-pandemic norms. It also suggests increasing confidence in the broader transportation network.

Despite persistent global supply chain challenges, the Port of New York and New Jersey has shown remarkable resilience and growth. Its steady cargo performance and restored regional traffic volumes confirm its standing as a vital hub for both trade and travel on the East Coast, poised to support future economic expansion.
