In January 2024, the Port of New York and New Jersey saw a 3.4% increase in total volume compared to the same month last year, reaching 667,346 TEUs (368,099 containers), reports Container News.
Auto Shipments Surge
Auto shipments experienced a significant surge, with 35,302 autos handled in January 2024, marking a 22.1% increase over January 2023.
Maintaining Position as Second Busiest Port
The port maintained its status as the nation’s second busiest for loaded imports and exports in January 2024, handling 447,514 loaded TEUs, reflecting a 2.6% increase compared to January 2023.
Increase in Imports
Imports recorded a 5.8% increase in January 2024 compared to the previous year, totaling 342,790 TEUs (189,699 containers). Import empties also saw a significant rise, increasing by 27.1% compared to January 2023.
Decline in Exports
Exports experienced a decline of 6.7% from January 2023 to January 2024, with 104,724 TEUs (55,890 containers) handled compared to 112,269 TEUs (60,506 containers) in January 2023. Export empties increased slightly by 4.9%, totaling 217,878 TEUs in January 2024.
Rail Volume Decrease
Rail volume decreased by 1.3% compared to the previous year, totaling 53,013 containers in January 2024
