  • The Port of Oakland stands as a dominant force in the sector of refrigerated cargo.
  • The port has secured its position as the top port in the United States in terms of reefer container volumes for export trade.

The Port of Oakland has ranked first among all US ports in international refrigerated export TEU for seven consecutive years, reports Port Technology.

The total commercial value of reefer exports through Oakland reportedly reached $7.1 billion in 2023.

Port of Oakland ranks top US gateway

Port of Oakland Maritime Director, Bryan Brandes, said: “The port and its partners have made significant investments in state-of-the-art, temperature-controlled facilities over the past seven years, including Cool Port, PCC Logistics and Custom Goods.”

With this additional cargo capacity and value-added services, we have been able to consistently attract the reefer export business.”

Due to its location on the US West Coast, the port serves as an export gateway for chilled products.

The port is frequently the last US port of call for cargo ships before they depart for Asia. As a result, departing from Oakland allows refrigerated cargo to arrive fresher in international markets.

In 2023, the Port of Oakland’s reefer export volumes climbed by 4 per cent, while total US temperature-sensitive export volumes fell by 20 per cent. The port raised its overall market share in reefer exports by 4.1 per cent, from 14.2 per cent to 18.3 per cent.
