  • Port of Oakland handled 192,313 TEUs in August 2025, nearly unchanged from last year.
  • Exports grew 5.2% while imports dipped 1.2%, reflecting shifting trade policies.
  • Year-to-date volumes are up 1.7%, keeping the port on track for strong year-end results.

The Port of Oakland recorded stable cargo flows in August, handling 192,313 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a marginal 0.3% decline compared with August 2024. Imports fell slightly to 82,245 TEUs (-1.2%), while exports climbed to 62,477 TEUs (+5.2%), highlighting steady demand from overseas buyers.

Trade Policy Adjustments

The August results followed a strong July surge, reflecting importer strategies to move goods earlier in the season amid tariff-related uncertainties. Exporters, meanwhile, continued to benefit from robust demand abroad. Empty container volumes aligned with seasonal expectations.

Vessel Activity

The port recorded 90 vessel calls during August, up 4.7% year-on-year. Ships averaged 2,137 TEUs per call, demonstrating efficient berth utilization and Oakland’s capability to handle larger vessels effectively.

Leadership Statement

“Our terminals and labor partners kept cargo moving efficiently through Oakland as shippers navigated these trade shifts,” said Bryan Brandes, Port of Oakland Maritime Director. “We expect cargo volumes to remain consistent through the fourth quarter, and Oakland remains committed to ensuring reliable, efficient operations for all our customers. Collaboration across the supply chain is key, and we will continue working closely with stakeholders to keep cargo flowing.”

Year-to-Date Results

From January through August 2025, the port processed 1.54 million TEUs, a 1.7% increase compared with the same period last year. This growth keeps Oakland on track for a solid year-end outcome as a critical U.S. gateway for international trade.
