The Port of Oakland experienced significant growth in full container volume in June 2024, signaling a return to pre-pandemic trends. Full imports saw a remarkable 26.8% increase, with 84,040 TEUs handled, compared to 66,295 TEUs in June 2023. This marks the highest monthly total since August 2022.
Preparing for Peak Season
Bryan Brandes, Port of Oakland Maritime Director, noted that ocean carriers and importers are boosting their inventories in anticipation of holiday and year-end shopping demand. “The peak season usually begins in late summer to early fall, but this year it appears to be early. July is forecasted to ease a bit with the rest of the year continuing with strong volumes,” he said.
Recovery in Full Exports
Full exports also saw a healthy increase of 22.9%, with 66,540 TEUs in June 2024, compared to 54,138 TEUs in June 2023. Exports have stabilized at around 65,000 to 70,000 TEUs each month, recovering from the depressed volumes during the pandemic. The Port of Oakland remains a key gateway for agricultural and recycled materials exports.
Changes in Empty Container Traffic
Empty imports declined by 11.1%, with 10,237 TEUs processed in June 2024, down from 11,516 TEUs in June 2023. Conversely, empty exports rose by 35%, with 32,244 TEUs handled, compared to 23,879 TEUs in June 2023.
Overall, the Port of Oakland’s performance in June 2024 reflects a positive trend in container volume, with significant increases in both full imports and exports, while managing changes in empty container traffic.
